Based in Al-JAZIRAH, Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Project Manager, the Nutrition and C4D Supervisor, supervises and ensures execution and reporting of the nutrition activities including OTP and TSFP, malnutrition screening, defaulter tracing and patient referral. S/he follows Sudan MOH guidelines, CMAM and IYCF protocols, and universal standards to ensure quality and continuity of care and the project’s field and community organization activities. S/he supervises the activities of the Nutrition Officer, C4D Officers, Nutrition Assistants, and & community health worker in his/her area of intervention.
The Nutrition / C4D Supervisor is responsible for the effective, qualitative and efficient implementation of nutrition and outreach activities in the health facility supported by PUI and in the community under the catchment of the health facility, providing technical support and on job training for the PUI C4D officers, Nutrition Officers and MOH Nutrition staff in the health facility and Mobile Health Teams.
Duties and responsibilities:
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
- Supervision and Technical Guidance:
- Ensure implementation of nutrition activities according to Sudan nutrition protocol, ensuring strict adherence to national and international standards.
- Supervise and ensure proper malnutrition screening of all under-five children, pregnant and lactating women (PLW).
- Oversee accurate anthropometric measurements (MUAC, weight, height) and ensure proper admission of beneficiaries into appropriate treatment programs (OTP, TSFP).
- Ensure timely identification and referral of children with complicated SAM to the Stabilization Center (SC) in collaboration with the HF supervisor and other relevant stakeholders.
- Monitor the quality of services provided and ensure that all nutrition interventions are implemented effectively and safely within the health facility and outreach areas.
- Ensure that all nutrition program activities are culturally sensitive and consider the specific needs of the local population.
- Works with the health facility supervisor on the facilitation of a referral system from the community to the health facilities.
- Ensure timely reporting of any rumours of disease outbreaks in the community
- He/she facilitates community screening of children for malnutrition
- Supports vaccination activities when needed by mobilization and other supports as needed
2. Human Resources and Capacity Building:
- Provide on-job training and mentorship to MOH staff on the implementation of the Sudan nutrition protocol and guidelines, ensuring they are well-equipped to manage malnutrition cases.
- Conduct regular competency assessments for PUI staff involved in the nutrition program and develop training plans to address skill gaps.
- Participate in the evaluation of staff performance and provide regular feedback, fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the nutrition team.
- Work closely with the C4D officer and C4D Supervisor to train Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) on malnutrition screening, referral pathways, and effective communication of nutrition messages to the community.
- Organize periodic refresher trainings to ensure staff stay up-to-date with any updates in protocols, ensuring consistency in the quality of services provided.
- Encourage knowledge sharing and learning within the team by organizing team meetings, case studies, and success stories from the field.
- He/she assesses the training needs of the supported community workers and refers them to his/her supervisor.
- Participates in the training of the supported community workers through monthly training supervision.
3. Data Management:
- Collect and compile weekly nutrition data (admissions, screenings, discharges, defaulter tracing, etc.) and submit it to the HF supervisor, ensuring data accuracy and timely reporting.
- Ensure that all beneficiary information is properly recorded and entered into the PUI database in a timely manner to facilitate program monitoring and evaluation.
- Analyse trends in malnutrition rates, defaulter rates, and program performance, and provide feedback to the supervisor for program adjustments where needed.
- In liaison with the C4D officer and C4D supervisor, develop lists for home visits, defaulter tracing, and prioritize follow-up with at-risk individuals, ensuring efficient tracking and minimizing defaulter rates.
- Contribute to the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual reports, highlighting program achievements, challenges, and recommendations for improvement.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of malnourished children, PLWs, and other beneficiaries, ensuring privacy and protection of sensitive information.
- Monitors the defined indicators, reports to his/her line manager, points out any difficulties encountered in implementation and proposes improvements or reorientations if necessary.
- Ensures the implementation of monitoring and/or evaluations, according to the needs defined by the project(s). He/she analyzes and transmits the collected information to his/her line manager.
- Transmits internal and external reports to his/her line manager while respecting internal validation deadlines and external contractual deadlines (activity reports).
4. Coordination/Nutritional Supply Chain:
- Ensure that the health facility is well-stocked with nutrition supplies, including RUTF, RUSF and essential medicines, in line with program needs.
- Work closely with the HF supervisor and logistics teams to ensure timely procurement and replenishment of nutrition supplies to avoid stock outs.
- Monitor the utilization rates of supplies, track inventory levels, and provide forecasts based on program consumption to maintain a continuous supply flow.
- Coordinate with pharmacy staff to ensure proper storage conditions for nutrition supplies and their adherence to safety standards, including monitoring of expiry dates and preventing stock wastage.
- Liaise with local authorities, partners, and other stakeholders to facilitate smooth delivery and distribution of nutrition commodities to health facilities.
- Ensure clear communication and coordination with logistics, health, and nutrition teams to address supply chain challenges and improve the efficiency of the program.
5. Others:
- Participate in nutrition assessments, surveys, and other relevant studies as required by the supervisor, contributing to data collection and analysis to guide program decision-making.
- Actively participate in health facility meetings, community meetings, and coordination forums with relevant partners and stakeholders to ensure integration of nutrition with other health interventions.
- Assist in the development and implementation of emergency preparedness and response plans for nutrition in case of floods, disease outbreaks, or conflict, ensuring continuity of care for malnutrition cases.
- Conduct community sensitization and awareness sessions on malnutrition prevention, infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices, and the importance of seeking early treatment for malnutrition.
- Maintain good relationships with local community leaders, health committees, and other key stakeholders to ensure community buy-in and support for the nutrition program.
- Ensure compliance with PUI’s policies and procedures, including safeguarding, security protocols, and gender equality principles during all program activities.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor to ensure the smooth functioning of the health facility and nutrition services.
