Performing autonomously and following up, the maintenance and correct repair of the biomed equipment in the project/mission and ensuring regularly that the usual medical maintenance and cleaning are done properly according to MSF standards and procedures, in order to ensure the equipment are in perfect running conditions

  • Performing and carrying out, all necessary complex / advanced installation, maintenance and repair of MSF biomedical equipment and ensuring that as few items are out of service at any given time. This includes the following tasks :
    • Organizing and participating in the installation of biomedical equipment
    • Following the schedule and carrying out preventive and curative maintenance works for the equipment according to the MSF and/or manufacturer’s protocols, manuals, and recommendations and ensuring that cleaning and simple maintenance are properly carried out by medical staff
    • Reporting any issues or problems on biomed equipment to his/her supervisor and proposing solutions (training of staff on a device, operating procedures, etc.). If maintenance work requires further assistance, documentation or additional tools, this shall be requested from and provided by his/her supervisor.
    • Participating in organising user training where required
  • Managing the stock of consumable items, filling in the stock cards, carrying out physical stock inventories, executing orders necessary for renewing stock, avoiding any shortage
  • Responsible for the equipment and tools (including extinguishers), checking they are correctly and safely used, maintaining and renewing them when necessary and keeping the inventory updated.
  • Keeping working area clean and tidy.
  • Ensuring that all record sheets and books related to maintenance are always completed (including date of intervention, replaced parts, problems and solutions) and preparing needed reports before and after any repair or required maintenance

Management tasks

  • Implement and endorse MSF-OCA Sudan Biomed policy.
  • Advise on purchase, installation and repair of biomed-hardware.
  • Communicates and provides update to Log Manager on weekly basis.
  • Communicates and provides updates to Project Logisticians on monthly basis.
  • Responsible for efficient setup of all biomedical documentation in the projects and capital, and to keep them updated.
  • Request for specialized support when required (external company, Biomed Referent Amsterdam or Biomed Flying Technician). 
  • Make and maintain contact/contracts with external companies:  organize annual diagnosis and certification for those items of equipment for which specialized training or specialists are required.
  • Ensures that HFMT (if adopted in the mission) is adequately adopted for Cold Chain and Biomed equipment in the mission.

Maintenance and repair

  • Biomed helpdesk (1st line support)
  • Put in place maintenance chronograms for all projects with biomed responsible.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and follow-up the preventive maintenance planning.
  • Follow-up 3-monthly checklists + protocols. The alternative is to provide training and monitoring that these tasks are being done by the project biomed responsible in the project.
  • Receives the reports on failures (with repair-form) identified by user, and providing a first diagnosis to the line manager and ensure communication with project.
  • Participates in the installations and hardware changes of Biomedical equipment
  • Travels to different projects to perform the needs as flying biomed technician and/or to provide training.
  • Keep inventory of tools available in the capital and in the project for repair and maintenance. Advice on tools needed.

Stock management

  • Regularly (every 4 months) makes inventory of biomedical equipment present in the project, its location and conditions.
  • Ensures that there are spare parts for preventive maintenance and basic repair in stock; discuss stock with Log manager and project Log Supervisor/Expat Logs and update stock with supply-log (with the respected line of communication of MTL’s in the project via the Project Logs).
  • Assist in management of Biomed Contingency Stock (if applicable).
  • Ensures that there is back-up for the equipment; or together with line manager make contingency plan.

Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Education:

  • Diploma as Biomedical technician preferred
  • Diploma as mechanical or electrical technician
  • Demonstrable technical skills and understanding

Experience:

  • Experience in a technical field. (Minimum 2 years’ experience)
  • Pedagogical skills are an asset

Languages: Mission language and local language essential

Knowledge: Know and understand all the biomedical devices present on the project(s) including the operating principle, use and technical documentation, of each biomedical equipment on the                               project/mission
