What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

The Analysis & Evidence Specialist 1 supports the delegation by performing essential tasks in spatial data analysis, data management, and GIS application support. S/he collects, cleans, and organizes geospatial data, ensuring its accuracy and completeness for analysis and reporting. Collaborating closely with the A&E team, s/he contributes to the development and maintenance of GIS applications, providing technical support and troubleshooting when needed. His/her responsibilities also include documenting workflows and methodologies to ensure transparency and reproducibility in GIS activities.

Accountabilities & functional responsibilities

  • Designs, enhances, configures, deploys, and maintains GIS tools.
  • Contributes to the collection, integration, and management of geospatial data.
  • Assists in maintaining data quality, accuracy, and compliance with relevant standards.
  • Supports spatial analysis using GIS software to derive meaningful insights.
  • Works closely with the A&E Coordinator to design and develop GIS products based on organizational requirements.
  • Contributes to configuring and maintaining GIS databases, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensures that knowledge is well-documented for future reference and training purposes.
  • Provides technical support to end-users and resolves GIS-related issues.
  • Ensures networking with external actors in order to improve quality and extend coverage of geodata.
  • Supports interoperability of GIS solutions with non-GIS tools. Assist with tools such as Tableau, Power BI, and data collection tools alongside GIS tools. This includes ensuring the functionality and usability of these tools for data visualization and analysis purposes.
  • Engages in professional development activities to enhance technical skills.
  • Supports the development and delivery of training programs for GIS end-users.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical specifications.

Certifications / Education required

  • University degree in Geoinformatics, Geography, Computer Science, Statistics, Social Sciences, Geoinformation Science, or another related field.
  • Strong knowledge of Esri ArcGIS software (Desktop, Web and Mobile) and GPS.
  • Good command of English and Arabic. Knowledge of French an asset.
  • Good computer proficiency.

Professional experience required

  • Typically, 3-5 years of professional experience in needs assessments, GIS, situation and problem analysis, monitoring & evaluation, operational information management or a closely related area
  • Proven field experience in supporting surveys, multiple assessments in countries, including the design, data collection and analysis.
  • Humanitarian experience in ICRC, Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement, UN agencies or NGOs
  • Proven understanding of data management, analysis, and coding, including SQL, Python, R, etc..
  • Desired experience in participating in the design and implementation of at least one type of program such as EcoSec, WatHab, Prot, Health or WeC
