NRC resumed operations in Sudan in 2020, providing humanitarian assistance, protection, and durable solutions. Our country programme integrates all of NRC’s six core competencies (camp management, education, ICLA, livelihoods, shelter, and WASH), and provides a rapid response capacity (including for the recent refugee emergency in eastern Sudan), and thematic capacities for cash and markets-based approaches, advocacy, digital modes of assistance, and co-leading various technical and strategic coordination platforms.

Role Specific Information

The Protection Assistant is responsible for the data collection linked to the protection monitoring in Kutum and to identify cases during field visits and refer cases internally and externally based on wishes and following up the referral principles and SOPs. The protection assistant will also support Camp management colleagues by disseminating protection information and on other key topics during the protection monitoring data collection implementation.

The following is a brief description of the role.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Adhere to NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines
  • Assist with the implementation of the CM portfolio according to project work plan
  • Prepare and develop status reports as required by management
  • Ensure proper collection and filing of documents
  • Promote and share ideas for improvement of the CM function
  • Support the implementation of the different components of protection monitoring, case identification and referrals according to tools, SOPs, and annual work plan.
  • Ensure that projects target beneficiaries most in need of protection and/or assistance
  • Regularly visit settlements to conduct focus group discussion, observations, quantitative survey to feed into the protection monitoring.
  • During field visits: Identify protection cases during the field visit, offer them with referrals and follow up on the referral.
  • Conduct regular data collection activities to support assessments and monitoring activities, including on service availability and standards in the sites, site identification exercises etc, and ensure data are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Organize regular meetings with community groups and committees, ensuring participation of women, youth, and marginalized groups, taking minutes of meetings and attendance sheets
  • Support organization of trainings to community committees, and community members, on topics relevant to Site Management and Coordination
  • Conduct Communications with Communities (CwC) activities in the sites, including regular outreach to the community and information campaigns, supported by daily workers as needed.
  • Support community mobilization efforts or information campaigns of community representatives or other humanitarian agencies as needed.
  • Implement Complaints and Response Mechanisms (CRM) activities in each of the sites: receive complaints, make referrals, and ensure feedback is received, and ensure good data management.
  • Consider gender, protection, and GBV concerns in all aspects of activities.
  • Promote participation and representation of women, youth, people with specific needs, and marginalised groups in all CM and partner activities.
  • Support vulnerable persons including through referral to protection partners, and support vulnerable persons at specific events (e.g. distributions, registration)

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • 1 year experience from working as a protection Assistant in a humanitarian/recovery context
  • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • knowledge of English language, Arabic and other local languages
  • Political and cultural awareness, as well as good understanding of the displacement context
  • University degree or technical school degree (social sciences preferred, e.g. education, political or Social science, international relations, law, journalism, gender studies, human rights etc.).
  • Preferable experience in a project implementation position in an NGO;
  • Excellent verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent team-working skills;
  • Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to cope with stressful situations;
  • Good written communication skills;
  • Good computer literacy, including use of smartphones and MS Office (Word and Excel);
  • Good verbal and written English skills are of benefit;
  • Knowledge of multi-sectoral humanitarian response, including Protection, WASH, Shelter, and emergency distribution is of benefit;
  • Experience in CCCM or Protection programming is of benefit
  • Preferable to be located in Kutum Locality.

Travel: 90% Travel / Site visits to areas of Camp Management Activity

Duration and type of contract:   Fixed term, 9 months (extendable depending on funding)
