NRC resumed operations in Sudan in 2020, providing humanitarian assistance, protection, and durable solutions. Our country programme integrates all of NRC’s six core competencies (camp management, education, ICLA, livelihoods, shelter, and WASH), and provides a rapid response capacity (including for the recent refugee emergency in eastern Sudan), and thematic capacities for cash and markets-based approaches, advocacy, digital modes of assistance, and co-leading various technical and strategic coordination platforms.

Role Specific Information

The Education Officer is responsible for the day-to-day implementation of Education activities in Khartoum State.

The following is a brief description of the role.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure adherence to NRC policies, tool, handbooks, guidelines, and donor requirements, with strict adherence to the Code of Conduct and Child Safeguarding Policies
  • Implement delegated Education activities according to proposals, budgets and workplans, in line with donor requirements
  • Prepare periodic status reports and other documents as required by management
  • Ensure proper filing of documents
  • Create weekly, monthly and quarterly implementation plans from proposal workplans
  • Ensure high levels of technical quality in the field when implementing Education activities
  • Ensure that procurement and distribution of materials and equipment is timely and in line with NRC policies and procedures; ensure accuracy of portfolio inventory (assets, supplies, materials)
  • Contribute to assessments (baseline, needs, market)
  • Ensure accurate project documentation, including collection of monitoring data and tracking of progress on output indicators; utilize data to contribute to reports as requested by management
  • Facilitate relationships with communities and community leaders to ensure buy-in and Do No Harm
  • Identify and document key protection issues at project sites
  • Provide support on youth/adolescent programming, including vocational training, life skills, basic literacy/numeracy, and alternative/accelerated education
  • Provide support for EiE and formal school activities, including distributions, construction activities, trainings, parent and community group activities, WASH, SIPs and multi-purpose cash
  • Support identification of needs for teachers, PTAs, SBMCs, SIPs
  • Contribute to proposal and strategy development through input on needs/gaps
  • Any other task relevant to the position as requested by the line and/or technical manager

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • At least 3 years experience working in a humanitarian/recovery context
  • Experience working in complex and volatiles contexts
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • Solid computer skills, including MS Word, Outlook and Excel
  • Ability to work diligently both independently and in a team setting
  • Knowledge about own leadership skills/profile
  • Willingness to travel regularly to the field in under-resourced settings
  • Fluency in Arabic, both written and verbal required; significant English language skills preferred
  • Knowledge of the EiE context in Sudan is required
  • Knowledge of the circumstances, needs and challenges displacement and conflict-affected refugee, host community, returnee and IDP children face preferred
  • Experience with youth/adolescent programming and linkages to livelihoods an asset
  • Experience with EiE and formal basic education in a humanitarian context preferred
  • Experience working with children and/or educators required
  • Experience liaising with local and community stakeholders preferred
  • Experience with project procurement and budget tracking a priority
  • Field level experience with an NGO preferred
  • Understanding of SPHERE and INEE Minimum Standards is required
  • Candidates with a university and/or advanced degree preferred; significant experience in the field of Education, PSS or Child Protection considered in lieu
