NRC resumed operations in Sudan in 2020, providing humanitarian assistance, protection, and durable solutions. Our country programme integrates all of NRC’s six core competencies (camp management, education, ICLA, livelihoods, shelter, and WASH), and provides a rapid response capacity (including for the recent refugee emergency in eastern Sudan), and thematic capacities for cash and markets-based approaches, advocacy, digital modes of assistance, and co-leading various technical and strategic coordination platforms.
Role Specific Information
Duties & Responsibilities
- Adherence to NRC policies, guidance and procedures
- Contribute to the implementation of Sudan Country Strategy especially WASH Strategy
- Supervise WASH project staff including WASH Officer (WASH in schools) & WASH Assistants
- Support WASH PDM in supervision/coordination of WASH projects White Nile – activities, budget, project documentation, in line with proposals, strategies and donor requirements
- Implement technical direction of WASH in White Nile, in collaboration with WASH PDM, and along with WASH PDM ensure quality technical projects
- Supervise construction/rehabilitation of water schemes and WASH infrastructure
- Supervise hygiene promotion activities
- Provide progress reports, support data collection
- Ensure WASH projects target beneficiaries most in need
- Explore and assess new and better ways to assist in WASH sector
- Ensure capacity building of WASH staff under your supervision, and White Nile transfer through mentoring and on the job training and request support from NRC when certain gaps in WASH White Nile are ascertained
- Liaise and collaborate with relevant local authorities and other key stakeholders
- Promote rights of IDPs/returnees in line with the Advocacy Strategy
- Contribute to needs assessments/base line, end line surveys, Post Distribution Monitoring, and provide area or locality specific information and inputs to WASH Program Manager, WASH Program Development Manager/Head of Programs, Area Manager for proposal development when required
- Responsible for detailed WASH project work plans, spending plans, M&E plans in collaboration with WASH PDM
- Supervise Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) project(s) in White Nile
- Scale up and diversify WASH operational capacity with support from WASH PDM, to ensure high standard project implementation
- Support inclusion of market-based approaches in WASH where appropriate
- Support inputs for GORS related data
- Mainstream Protection in WASH projects, in line with NRC’s Safe & Inclusive Programming
- Contribute to WASH activities as part of Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) including being part of Extended Emergency Response Team (EERT)
- Participate in coordination mechanisms such as relevant sector Working Groups, and coordinate closely with relevant local partners and local authorities (HAC, Ministry Infrastructure/Water Resources etc.) and humanitarian actors at area/field level
- Undertake Performance Management reviews with staff reporting to WASH Team Leader
Our Ideal Candidate:
- Technical background in WASH, university degree level preferred
- Minimum 3 years’ WASH experience in a humanitarian/ early recovery context
- Experience working in complex and volatile contexts
- Previous experience working in White Nile is essential
- Technical WASH expertise (rural experience preferred) including experience with construction of water surface systems
- Good working English (both written and verbal); fluency in Arabic.
- Knowledge of White Nile context essential
- Experience with start-up programming an advantage
- Strong experience in community driven WASH programming
- Strong inter-personal, communication and network-building White Nile
- Strong organisational and team working in White Nile
- Good cultural awareness and sensitivity
