Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is found in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Country Office in Sudan. This position is based in Khartoum but has been temporarily relocated to Port Sudan until conditions allow for a deployment to Khartoum. The incumber will serve as Field Language Assistant and will work under the supervision and guidance of the Head of the OHCHR country presence or his/her Deputy.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority the Arabic/English Field Language Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
• Provides clear and verbal interpretation and communication, interfacing between Office staff, officials, partner organizations and the local population in support of operations and activities.
• Translation of high level documents and communications from Arabic to English and vice-versa covering a broad range of the subject dealt with the United Nations.
• Liaises with counterparts in other sections relating to interpretation and translation requirements and duties. • Drafts and translates correspondence as required.
• Assists Office staff with the preparation and translation of documents, briefing notes, press releases and media statements and background information.
• Performs other duties as required.
Education
High school diploma is required.
Work Experience
A minimum of five (05) years of work experience in providing translation/interpretation services. The minimum year of relevant experience is reduced to 3 years for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher is required. Out of five years, two (2) years of experience in English/Arabic translation and/or interpretation is required. Experience working for International Organization and / or Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
