UNOPS Horn of Africa Multi-Country Office is recruiting for this position through a Desk Review process-AutoCAD Officer (Retainer) based in Port Sudan, Sudan with with travel to project sites

The AutoCAD Officer in collaboration with the Infrastructure team, will be responsible for conducting site assessments, developing drawings, reviewing and harmonizing drawings from other disciplines, supporting the preparation of specifications and bills of quantities, coordinating with other disciplines, and compiling design documents for IPMG reviews. The AutoCAD Officer will also make corrections to design documents based on review comments, ensuring a thorough understanding of the terms, conditions, and the respective roles and responsibilities of the partners/stakeholders. This will ensure that the project outputs meet the business cases for both UNOPS and its partners. The success of the project(s), and consequently of the AutoCAD Officer, will be based on the defined Success Criteria.
Functional Responsibilities
Under the overall supervision of the Infrastructure Team Leader, the AutoCAD Officer will assist in preparing design concepts and presentations required to ensure the timely, cost-effective, and quality delivery of the works. The incumbent reports to the Infrastructure Team Leader and will be required to undertake the following tasks:
- Assist in preparing design concepts, drawings, technical specifications, and presentations required to ensure the timely, cost-effective, and quality delivery of the work, including:
- Participating in the preparation of proposals for new projects and being responsible for the relevant preliminary planning and design documentation.
- Contributing to revising the design and drawings of existing buildings and infrastructure for rehabilitation.
- Preparing and checking technical specifications and the detailed BoQ for assigned projects.
- Provide assistance to the UNOPS technical team in the design/works, architectural and engineering designs, selection of materials, equipment, and manpower requirements.
- Advise on good environmental practices and controls during construction to mitigate the environmental impacts of the works.
- Assist in generating regular project reports in accordance with the contractual agreements; maintaining updates and progress reports as required by UNOPS standard procedures.
- Attend coordination meetings when required.
- Contribute to revising the details, designs, and drawings when required during the project lifecycle.
- Actively engage in knowledge sharing and improve one’s professional skills.
- Maintain design and construction records and contribute to the production of “As Built” drawings and details.
- Check technical specifications and the detailed BoQ for assigned projects.
- Maintain updates and progress reports as required by UNOPS standard procedures.
- Perform any other duties deemed necessary by the Project Manager & Head of Field Office.
- Actively participate in daily design team/project meetings.
- Actively participate in weekly project progress meetings and project staff meetings.
- Maintain accurate, quality, and completion documentation as identified in the responsibilities above.
Technical Tasks:
- Produce architectural design drawings that include plans, sections, elevations, and details of working drawings using the latest version of AutoCAD software.
- Produce structural design drawings, such as structural floor plans, columns, beams, steel structures, details of reinforcement bars, etc., based on information from the project engineer.
- Review the design drawings for the projects from the field in terms of accuracy and suitability to overall design and construction requirements, including identifying improvements in the designs and proposing practical solutions.
- Review the accuracy of the bill of quantities for the projects proposed, matching international standards.
- Ensure the drawings are done according to instructions, schematic drawings, and technical specifications as per the contractual agreement.
- Check and approve material and equipment incorporated in the works.
- Ensure as-built drawings and maintenance manuals are created for the finished materials used in the works.

The successful achievement of results will ensure coordinated and standardized design documents, leading to high-quality drawings and reporting.
Education/Experience/Language requirements
Education
- A Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related field is required.
- A Technical Diploma in Architecture or Engineering, coupled with at least two (2) additional years of relevant experience, may be accepted in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree.
Experience
- Two years (or more, depending on academic credentials) of experience in infrastructure projects.
- Two years of experience assisting in the development of complete sets of architectural and engineering design drawings is required.
- At least one year of experience working in AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, or any relevant architectural/engineering software is required.
- Experience in the preparation of architectural and engineering drawings/drafting using AutoCAD (current version) is desired.
- Previous design experience working with UNOPS will be preferred.
- Experience working with UN or other humanitarian/development agencies will be an asset.
- Experience working on international/local projects in conflict- or disaster-prone areas will be preferred.
- At least one year of experience working in AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, or any relevant architectural/engineering software is required.
- Experience in contracting and/or consulting environments is also an advantage.
Language
- Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
- Knowledge of another UN official language is an asset.

They constitute a contract whereby the Retainer may be requested to provide a specific output/deliverable within a specified period of time, on short notice. When holding a retainer contract, individuals may receive ad-hoc requests from the UNOPS project teams or country offices, and the quantity of requests will vary depending on the current needs. UNOPS shall have no obligation to obtain any minimum quantity of services from the Individual Contractor during the duration of the retainer ICA.
