Activity Summary:
In late 2020, some of the heaviest rainfall in over a century hit Sudan’s Khartoum State, leaving over 875,000 people directly impacted by flooding and flash flooding. As a result of the floods, over 10 million people were left at risk of contracting water or vector borne disease[1] and more than 100,000 houses were reportedly damaged or destroyed across Sudan.
DRC’s response aims to address the immediate needs of flood affected communities of Soba West in Khartoum, through targeted sectors of DRR (such as training of community members for mapping of risk areas) , shelter, and market recovery. The proposed action is informed by multi-sector needs assessments in the target intervention areas which have clearly demonstrated that humanitarian needs continue to remain after flooding, and require a dedicated response.
Overall purpose of the role:
The Shelter /DRR Assistant will work jointly with Shelter Officer and support him in the rehabilitation of the affected shelters in flooding areas, recovery of the business affected in the targeted communities, including needs assessment activities, technical shelter surveys to categorize the shelters based on their current structural conditions as well as Cash for Work activities and trainings of members of communities as part of DRR activities are the main objectives of the role
Responsibilities:
- Ensure adherence with DRC policies, tools, handbooks, and guidelines
- Enable effective dialogue with the affected community to allow the agency to be held to account for the quality of the shelters programs.
- Ensure that projects target beneficiaries most in need, and explore and assess new and better ways to assist
- Promote and share ideas for technical improvements
Specific responsibilities
- Assist with the implementation of the support function portfolio according to plan of action.
- Prepare and develop status reports as required by management.
- Ensure proper filing of documents.
- Promote and share ideas for improvement of the support function.
- Help plan and take part in need assessments.
- Ensure proper filing of technical documents in both hard and soft copies.
- Prepare detail implementation plans, monthly and weekly plans of shelter activities in his/her area.
- Help plan activities implementation of shelter activities in support of Shelter Officer.
- Collate data from the Cash for Work and prepare regular reports on activities and shelter condition for monitoring.
- Liaise with community leaders and other sectors and agencies working locally in order to coordinate within the shelter sector and between sectors such as Protection, MEAL, Supply chain.
- Prepare activity implementation and monitoring reports.
- Facilitate appropriate community involvement in design and delivery of essential shelter projects activities.
- Beneficiaries and other stakeholder’s community mobilization.
Experience and Technical Competencies
- Previous experience in conducting shelter projects will be preferred.
- Good documentation and report writing skills is required.
- 1-year experience in building construction industry private sector is an advantage;
- Problem-solver and results-oriented;
- Excellent skills in Microsoft Office; Engineering design software such as CAD is an advantage.
- Familiarity with GPS, ARC, GIS is an advantage.
Education:
University degree in Civil Engineering or Architecture is an advantage.
