Contribute to the development of humanitarian affairs activities in the Mission by supporting the Management Coordination Team in the analysis of context, humanitarian situation, security, and in the definition of advocacy strategies, according to MSF policies and values, to improve the population’s humanitarian situation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform data collection and research concerning local and international context, with regards to security, medical, nutritional, and humanitarian issues, in order to provide reliable information for further decision-making.
- Support the Head of Mission and field coordinators in the analysis of the data collected, in order to better orient the programmes and projects, to provide an optimal response to population needs.
- Compile regular updates of the ongoing (inter-)national activities and plans of NGOs, UN, ICRC, donors, authorities, and other actors on lobby, policy, and operational plans and initiatives to adequately reflect MSF’s activities and objectives.
- Collaborate with the HoM, the Operational/Humanitarian Affairs Department at HQ, and other relevant parties to develop a coherent global strategy in order to address the humanitarian situation.
- Define and review messages, tools, lobbying activities, and other advocacy action plans and strategies to raise all humanitarian issues in the mission and seek assistance and protection for the affected population.
- Ensure smooth working relationships with local authorities, other NGOs, local communities, and other factors, to facilitate MSF teams ‘ better access to the population and improve MSF activities’ coordination with third parties.
- Organize discussions, trainings, briefings, etc., about human rights and humanitarian law issues and current and future advocacy activities, to raise awareness of MSF staff regarding these matters.
- Participates in the elaboration and updating of the Country Risk Analysis
- Promotes and assists in implementing advocacy activities locally, nationally, and internationally.
- Supervises humanitarian affairs-related staff in the Mission.
- Informal and formal data collection: conduction of conversations, interviews and focus group discussions with patients, caretakers, community members and community leaders to guide MSF operational decisionmaking and advocacy priorities (this includes holding the data collection sessions according to ethical guidelines, transcribing the data, and also analysing and presenting key findings to MSF decisionmakers)
- Informal and formal engagement with other humanitarian actors, local, national, and international; mapping and analysis of the local humanitarian landscape
- Support for identifying and following up on protection referral pathways for vulnerable patients
- Support for the conduct of assessments
- Contribute to monitoring and analysing the humanitarian context
- Ad hoc tasks and responsibilities in line with the changing context and needs of MSF.
- All of the above were carried out across MSF project locations in central-eastern Sudan, with the role entailing frequent travel between MSF project locations. While the position will be based in Gedaref, limited time will be spent there, and the position is considered to be ‘flying’, visiting and working with different MSF project teams across central-eastern Sudan
Qualification, Skills, and Experience Required:
Education: Preferred: degree in law, humanitarian affairs, political science, social sciences, social work, anthropology or related university degree.
Experience: Preferred: Previous working experience of at least two years in research, analysis or advocacy and/or experience with MSF or other NGOs/INGOs/UN agencies.
Languages: Excellent command of spoken and written English and Arabic. Tigrinya an asset.
Knowledge: Essential: computer literacy (Word, Excel and Internet).
