DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The position is located in the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS). The United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 2524 (2020) authorizing the mandate of UNITAMS which is to assist the political transition, including in the areas of constitution making and elections, progress towards democratic governance, in the protection and promotion of human rights, and sustainable peace; to support peace processes and implementation of future peace agreements; to assist peacebuilding, civilian protection and rule of law, in particular in Darfur and the Two Areas; and to support the mobilization of economic and
development assistance and coordination of humanitarian assistance. The position is located in the Office of Support to the Political Transition (UNITAMS). The position is based in EL-Fasher – Sudan and is located in the Secretariate of the Permanent Ceasefire Committee (PCC). The incumbent will report to the Chair of the PCC.
Responsibilities:
Within the limits of delegated authority, the Associate Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for performing the following duties:
• Participate fully in assigned operational activities related to implementation of the PCC’s mandate in support of ceasefire monitoring.
• Support good offices and negotiation initiatives and an integrated approach that includes a rights-based dimension, conflict prevention sensitivity and gender perspective into the policy, planning and operational activities of the PCC.
• Develops and maintains relations with government officials, military and security officials, tribal leaders, civil society, women’s groups, armed movements and other stakeholders at the working level and advises them on issues and policies of mutual concern; facilitates the holding of meetings.
• Represents the team at round tables, seminars and conferences. • Support his/her supervisor in the formulation of the work programme, budget and medium-term plans of the PCC by participating in meetings, and compiling or researching issues related to the mission and the PCC
• Analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press; maintains up-to-date knowledge of events related to political issues in a specified area or subject matter and identifies areas of concern to support the decision-making, early warning, policy development and planning for an integrated UN within the Mission.
• Monitors political, socio-economic, and politically relevant developments in an assigned area and drafts talking points, summaries, analysis and other documents
• Prepares summaries of articles from a wide variety of sources and draft a variety of correspondence, and sections of reports, briefing notes and talking points for the Senior Management.
• Provides input into political, humanitarian, and economic efforts and programmes.
• Creates databases that track project progress and provides other information relevant to assigned area.
• Performs other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related, is required.
A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required.
One-year experience of outreach and coordination with a range of interlocutors is desirable.
One-year experience in monitoring, analysis, and reporting of political and socio economic trends is desirable.
Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English, is required. Fluency in Arabic is required.
Knowledge of local languages is desirable.

Assessment:
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a written assessment followed by a competency-based interview.
