Under the managerial and technical supervision of the Senior Health Officer the Community Health and Mental Health 

officer (CH/MH) will be based in Blue Nile and will be responsible for the psycho-social support, mental health, and the community component of the project. S/He will hold regular meetings with all Health Workers (HWs) and Community Health Workers (CHWs) to identify any gaps in mental health mainstreaming and will strengthen linkages with existing partners supporting protection activities. S/He will provide support to RI-supported clinics in all aspects related to mainstreaming of mental health in the provision of primary healthcare services.  

 S/he will provide direct supervision to the Community Health Supervisors

Roles and Responsibilities

Under the technical supervision of the Health Officer, the CH/MH officer will have the following responsibilities: 

Activity implementation

  • Ensure that all RI staff are trained and mentored on mental health and psychosocial support.
  • Supervise and monitor the psychosocial services among the different communities where RI is operating.
  • Provide an array of psychological counseling services that aim at promoting mental health among different communities.
  • Develop service plans, conduct reviews as needed throughout the duration of the counseling services, and share them with the respective supervisor. 
  • Support the MHPSS Assistant to provide mental health assessments, counseling, and referral, when required.
  •  Follow up with the MHPSS Assistant in cases involving hospital admissions.
  • Support the MHPSS Assistant in providing home based psychosocial counselling services to those traumatized and abused during different crises. 
  • Support the MHPSS Assistant in the implementation of   Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) protocols, in the identification of possible victims of SGBV, and in the referrals of SGBV cases for medical and psycho-social support.  Support the MHPSS Assistant in referring all mentally sick patients from the community level to health facilities.

Conduct service quality monitoring and data collection:

  • Conduct regular visits to health facilities at the field level to ensure mental health mainstreaming is taking place.
  • Review and verify the completion of monthly data about mental health activities where needed.
  • Ensure all UNFPA, and WHO guidelines and protocols are being followed in managing patients.
  • Review data/ information on mental health and take appropriate actions in addressing gaps/ issues. 

Reporting:

  • Prepare reports of mental health activities implemented, and monitoring visits conducted, and share them with the Senior Health Officer.
  • Support the health team to deliver weekly/bi-weekly updates in a timely manner.

Coordination

•Represent RI in GBV/protection sub-clusters.

• Participate cluster led mental assessments.

Minimum Qualification, Skills, and Experience Required:

Qualification and Experience

  1. A Bachelor’s degree or diploma in psychology, psychiatr,y or public health with postgraduate training in mental health. 
  2. Computer literacy (word, excel, and Internet) is strongly recommended.
  3. Working knowledge of English, with the ability to write in both English and Arabic languages. 
  4. Essential 2 years experience minimum as a Psychologist.
  5. Previous experience working with NGOs in developing countries. At least 2-3 Years.
  6. Excellent facilitation and training skills.
